À propos du livre
Glass fibres form the foundation of a composites industry with a global annual consumption of more than six million tons of reinforcement grade E-glass fibre used in the production of greater than ten million tons of high performance composites. Possibly the most critical component involved in the manufacture of glass fibres and their composites is the fibre sizing. Yet because of the intense industrial secrecy surrounding sizings there are very few people in composite material supply chain who have more than a superficial understanding their full role. The 15 papers in this volume have been arranged to reflect the three stages of my journey into glass fibre sizings. Firstly, as a researcher on the outside of the sizing veil of secrecy, then on the inside researching and developing the secrets of sizing, and finally on the outside again as a researcher and an educator about sizings.

À propos du créateur
Professor Jim Thomason is an internationally-recognized scientist known for his research into glass fibres and reinforced composites structure-performance relationships. He has had 25 years experience in the research laboratories of two major materials multinationals (Shell Chemicals and Owens Corning Fibreglass), involving extensive fundamental research and development of glass fibre sizes and coatings for enhanced composite performance. He has published more than 200 articles and holds 5 patents in composites technology. In 2007 Jim was appointed Professor of Advanced Materials and Composites at the University of Strathclyde. He is currently applying his experience from both sides of the Industry-Academia interface to build the Advanced Composites Group whose mission is to provide fundamental scientific and industrially relevant research understanding of reinforced polymer composites. He is still highly active in the field of sizes and interfaces in glass fibre reinforced composites.
