À propos du livre
is a photographic tale about the city, the volcano and 3 seas that uncovers both the beauty and the darkness of nature and human behavior.
Sicily has its great marvels and joys. It is a place where the traditional past in one way or another always seems to be present in modern life. But it is also a place that is as well unnervingly bright and beautiful as -literally- black and polluted.
Where infrastructures are already in decay before their “never completion”.
Where majestic nature is abused as a garbage dump.
All photographs were made on trips made between 2017-2023 in Sicily, Italy, mainly in the City of Catania, around and on Mount Etna, in the Campagna and along the coasts of three seas.
"Kennst du dass Land wo die Zitronen Blühen?" Goethe wrote about Sicily even before he even was there.
And obviousy, Sicily has its great marvels and joys.

À propos du créateur
Herman Wouters
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
I focus on projects recording places and objects in the public urban landscape. The photographs deal with vernacular subject matter and take note of human nature, in likely and unlikely places, revealing an often overlooked sign language of the street. This "Slow Photography", that balances on the edge between an actual documentation and personal vision, is often edited in small editions of self published photobooks and zines.
