À propos du livre
This project records what the snow left on show on one street, on one day. St Bede's Close, Durham, January 1 2010.
I had walked this road before, but never been inspired to photograph it. Funny how just a few inches of snow could have such a dramatic effect on the street - and my outlook. A fresh white canvas on which previously hidden photographs suddenly presented themselves.
I noticed how snow disguises the boundaries between spaces. Footpaths and roads merge. The lines between public and private are temporarily obscured. And ignored. These changes are not just physical. Social barriers, too, are removed. The casual interactions people usually avoid are now accepted. Encouraged, even. But just as the white blanket covers some things, it draws particular attention to those left exposed. Things that may normally go unnoticed suddenly assume heightened importance, thrown into sharp relief against the crisp whiteness.
I challenged myself to make the most of this temporary opportunity, and shot for a day without leaving the street I started on. You can see the project in the book preview, or on my website.
