À propos du livre
I got the idea for this book after watching a PBS show on the life and philosophy of the Buddha. It was an extremely well made program that was full of quotes from, stories about, and interpretations of the Buddha teachings. I felt really peaceful and even a little enlightened when it was over, but most important was that I wanted to learn more about the Buddha. So I looked up some of his quotes. One of the first that I read was a quote about how holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with intent to throw it at someone else. I thought the imagery and meaning conveyed with the quote was so well refined and instantly enlightening that I read all of his quotes that I could find, and then started reading the quotes of other thinkers.
One philosopher led me to another, then to a comedian, a poet, an activist, a senator, an actor, a rapper, a novelist, an inventor, a playwright, a painter, an astronomer and a scientist. And after reading my two thousand and eighty third quote, I started to realize that thinkers millennia apart, from all over the globe, rich and poor, famous and not, all seemed to be aware of a wisdom on how to live a successful, love-filled, high ideal and beautiful life. When I picked out a bunch of quotes that I liked, I realized that they could be arranged to tell a story.
A story told by quotations, like a narrative collectively written by the most insightful men and women to ever walk the Earth. When you read this book imagine yourself as a fly on the wall of the most interesting room in all of history, a room filled with amazing minds. What do you think you’d hear?
