This collection of words and images follows the exploits of 16 Bantam hockey players skating with the Glenlake Hawks organization over the course of a season.
Written in the style of the sports pages of a small town newspaper, the stories chronicle their victories and defeats as the boys leave childhood behind and enter adolescence and learn the fine art of fast, physical hockey, working through the challenges of losing streaks, winning streaks, injury and self-control.
By the end of the year, players with nicknames like as “Piccolo”, “Capt. Crunch”, “Chuckie”, “Circus” and “The Wrecking Crew” had matured and became one of the fastest skating and best puck handling teams in the loop, scoring over 123 goals and wracking up almost 400 minutes in penalties.
