A photograph of an aunt, an uncle and two cousins a woman has never known – who were among those who perished in Poland during the Second World War – gives rise to a need to imagine their lives, and even the lives of their grandparents. From the time she was a child, her father’s stories had intrigued her, his village, his early hardships, his immigration to America in the early twenties – but entangled in them more and more, the feeling of loss, the sadness that later events would reveal. The after effects of loss that go on and on, make up the latter part of this attempt at understanding family and love and loss – and even regret – and the ultimate value of each individual life.
