This small volume contains a selection of images from 'unmonumental', a project by Joy Garnett, with an essay by Tom McGlynn. 'unmonumental' is an ongoing social media performance that generates and instantly shares photographs of ephemeral artifacts in the New York City streets. Comprising over 800 photographs, 'unmonumental' has grown into a project of monumental proportions.

Joy Garnett is an interdisciplinary artist and writer living in Brooklyn, NY. Her paintings dwell on scenes that cannot be perceived with the naked eye. Her social media photography explores the changing dynamics between our material and virtual worlds. Her writings have appeared in Harper’s, M/E/A/N/I/N/G, Ibraaz, Cultural Politics, Journal of Visual Culture and anthologies published by Polity (Cambridge) and Edinburgh University Press.
