Because of ageing and a lack of calling, there are not many monks and nuns anymore. This results in the disappearance of monasteries. They will be demolished or get a new function and destination.
This also happened in Beek, The Netherlands, where the ageing of the nuns, the order of the Carmalitessen has been struck in a way that a community life was impossible in such a big building. There were only a few nuns left.
It was impossible to maintain.
Because of this, the nuns had to make the painfull the decision to leave and settle somewhere else. Now to a living and care centre in Maastricht, about 20 km to the south.
Thanks to the carefully cooperation of these carmalitessen, it was possible for me to make these photographs in the last year of their stay.
