Every year on the 4th of July the residents of Woodvale, Lanvale and Melrose streets, with invited grandparents and other relatives, are led in a parade by Steve Kush in red, white and blue to the Kush house on Woodvale Street where they spend the afternoon eating and drinking and watching the kids slide on the water slide. This year there was an egg throwing contest, a water balloon throwing contest and a pie eating contest after which the organizers were soaked with water balloons and pelted with the remains of the pies. It was a marvelous afternoon. At sunset, full and groggy and sticky, the children on their decorated bicycles, followed by their parents, headed for home. Included is an impression of the events with many of the participants, though in the mayhem of eggs, balloons and pies a number of people have probably been left out.
