Hadley Read grew up on a farm near the small town of Stanhope in Hamilton County, Iowa. His reminiscences about the farm and his childhood were memorialized in the book Morning Chores and Other Times Remembered, published by the University of Illinois Press in 1978. Before he died in 1981, he wrote a sequel to Morning Chores, written in free verse, which tells the story of his coming of age while in high school in Stanhope from 1931 to 1935 - the middle of the Depression. It evokes rich, vivid memories of the people, places and events which shaped the lives of those who grew up in rural America during this period. This is his book.
