À propos du livre
This is a book of Polaroid SX-70 photographs of Buddhist and Hindu street shrines of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, during the mid eighties. The art of Nepal depicts in sculpture, painting, tapestry, and architectural woodcarvings the huge pantheon of Hindu and Buddhist deities and themes associated with them. In image and symbol, the two great religions share a common origin and the belief that all deities are embodiments of a single cosmic force or unifying principle. Scattered all over the Kathmandu valley, in towns and villages, in courtyards and along sidewalks, are thousands of small shrines, each devoted to a favorite god or Bodhisattva, or to gods and goddesses whose origins date back to prehistoric times. On each are brilliantly colored marks of worship: ritual offerings of red and yellow powders, fruits and vegetables, and occasionally the blood of goats or chickens sacrificed for special occasions.
