Hầu Đồng: The Spirit Mediums of Vietnam is the first photo book of its kind. Đạo Mẫu - The Mother Goddess worship - is a syncretic religious tradition in Viet Nam that mixes components of indigenous goddess worship and other local beliefs, with Daoist and Buddhist elements.
Hầu Đồng is one of the main rituals of Đạo Mẫu, and exemplifies the worship of mother goddesses in Viet Nam. During these rituals, the mediums go into ceremonial trances so that their bodies can receive the spirits of various deities.
Tewfic El-Sawy is a New York City based freelance photographer specializing in documenting endangered cultures, religious rituals and traditional lifeways of Asia, Latin America and Africa. Known as The Travel Photographer, he also leads photography expeditions and teaches multimedia and street photography. He is the only non-Vietnamese photographer to have photographed Hầu Đồng ceremonies in such depth.
