This book shares some visual voices of remarkable teachers from Epsom Normal Primary School, Auckland, Aotearoa-New Zealand.

These teachers considered what it might mean to be a spirit-aware teacher in the art of teaching.

They examined the work of artists such as Robyn Kahukiwa, who visually speak with a prophetic voice through their work.

Then, within a short art workshop session, they produced visual statements that reveal a self-portrait from looking inwards—touching on their experiences of awe, mystery and wonderment that speak to them from within.

The symbol of the New Zealand Curriculum is the nautilus—a marine animal with a spiral shell and chambers lined with mother-of-pearl. As the nautilus outgrows existing chambers, it creates new chambers—a metaphor of the intellectual and spiritual growth of learners.

These artworks represent a nautilus experience—for as we are stretched by seeking inwards, our inner chambers of mother-of-pearl become enlarged and enriched.
As we expect of our students,
they expect no less of us.
