The personal story of four Australian scientists who worked behind the Iron Curtain in 1974 at the height of the Cold War, starting in Leningrad and Moscow then travelling to remote areas collecting seeds of wild relatives of crops and pastures with potential for use in Australia. The book includes observations of life under Soviet rule as well as numerous photographs that illustrate the landscapes visited, including Soviet Central Asia and the Caucasus region.
