The Art of the American Cemetery is a look at the American Victorian era cemeteries through photography. The text describes the cemeteries of major cities across the United States with stories featuring a few of the famous residents buried there but with more emphasis on the sculptures, mausoleums, and artwork. Unusual histories and myths are sometimes included.

The major cities include Colma and Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Buffalo in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Richmond, Virginia. There is also a short section on Paris, France and Italian cemeteries and their influence on the art of the American Cemetery.
